Where to Stay in Koh Samui with a Baby

One of the things we loved most about Koh Samui was how different each area felt. During our month in Thailand, we stayed in three completely different accommodations around the island: a beachfront mud villa, a private pool villa, and a budget-friendly beachfront hotel near Fisherman's Village.

Each offered something unique, and each suited a different style of family travel. If you're planning a trip to Koh Samui with a baby or toddler, here's our honest experience at all three.

The Mud: A Unique Beachfront Escape

Best for: Couples, families looking for relaxation, and anyone wanting a unique stay right on the beach.

Our first stop in Koh Samui was The Mud, and it ended up being one of our favorite stays of the entire trip.

We splurged on a beachfront villa, and it was absolutely worth it. The villas are built in a unique mud-inspired style that feels both rustic and luxurious. Stepping out onto our patio, we had direct access to the beachfront pool and pool bar, with the beach just beyond.

One of the biggest benefits of staying here with a baby was the layout. While Parker napped inside the villa, we could relax on the patio, play cards, read, or simply enjoy the view. The hammock quickly became one of our favorite spots.

The beach itself was incredibly quiet. We often had long stretches almost entirely to ourselves, and the sunsets were spectacular. One morning we headed out for an early sunrise walk along the beach and captured some of our favorite family photos from the entire trip.

Family-Friendly Features

The staff at The Mud were exceptional. Every interaction was warm and welcoming, and they went out of their way to make Parker feel included.

The onsite restaurant provided a highchair and frequently brought fresh fruit for Parker without us even asking. It's little touches like that which can make traveling with a baby feel so much easier.

The restaurant is open-air, which means it can get quite warm during the day, but the fans helped keep things comfortable. We found breakfast and dinner particularly enjoyable there.

Although there were several beachfront restaurants within walking distance, we ended up eating onsite most of the time because the food was consistently good and incredibly convenient.

What We Loved

  • Beautiful beachfront location

  • Gorgeous sunsets and sunrise walks

  • Amazing staff

  • Family-friendly restaurant

  • Direct access to the pool from our villa

  • Unique accommodation style

Things to Consider

  • Open-air restaurant can be warm during hotter parts of the day

  • Slightly more remote than some areas of the island

Pawathorn Pool Villas: Privacy and Relaxation

Best for: Families wanting privacy and a private pool experience.

Our second stay was completely different.

At Pawathorn Pool Villas, every villa has its own walled private pool. Opening the villa door and stepping directly into the pool felt super luxurious.

The pool area was very sunny, so we typically swam in the mornings and evenings. The entire property was quiet, peaceful, and private.

But the real highlight was something we hadn't anticipated.

While Parker napped inside the villa, we could relax in our private pool with the door slightly ajar so we could hear him. Having that freedom felt incredible after months of baby naps dictating our schedule. It was easily one of our favorite experiences of the entire trip.

The Beach

A short walk down a pathway and staircase leads to a small beach.

The beach itself wasn't particularly impressive. Higher up on the sand there was quite a bit of garbage, which was disappointing to see.

However, during low tide, the rocky shoreline created numerous tidal pools that became perfect little splash zones for Parker. He loved sitting in the shallow water and exploring.

The Villa and Breakfast

The villa itself was very clean and comfortable, though a bit dated in places.

Breakfast was a standout.

The restaurant offered both indoor and outdoor seating, which was a welcome change after several open-air dining experiences. Being able to sit in air conditioning with a baby during breakfast made mornings much easier.

And the croissants? Easily some of the best homemade croissants we've ever had.

What We Loved

  • Private pool access

  • Peaceful atmosphere

  • Incredible breakfast

  • Indoor air-conditioned dining

  • Perfect setup for nap times

Things to Consider

  • Limited restaurants and attractions within walking distance

  • Frequent taxi rides required

  • Beach was not particularly clean

We primarily used Grab throughout our stay, but transportation costs can add up quickly if you're heading out multiple times per day.

Pico Samui: Great Location on a Budget

Best for: Families wanting convenience and walkability.

Our final stay was at Pico Samui.

Compared to the previous two accommodations, Pico Samui was simpler, but it offered fantastic value and one major advantage: location.

The rooms were clean, comfortable, and had everything we needed.

The property is within walking distance of Fisherman's Village, making it easy to explore restaurants, shops, markets, and attractions without constantly relying on taxis.

Pool and Beach Access

The pool is smaller than what you'll find at many larger resorts, but it sits directly on the beach and offers beautiful views.

There's also an onsite restaurant that was consistently good and convenient.

While this area of Koh Samui tends to be more expensive overall, we found the room rates at Pico Samui to be very reasonable compared to many nearby properties.

An Unexpected Travel Win

One of the most practical discoveries was a self-service laundry facility just up the road.

Laundry can get surprisingly expensive when traveling for an extended period with a baby, especially in a hot climate where clothes seem to multiply overnight.

The machines were inexpensive, easy to use, and close enough that we felt comfortable leaving our clothes while they washed and dried before returning to collect them.

For long-term travelers, this was a surprisingly valuable convenience.

What We Loved

  • Excellent location

  • Walking distance to Fisherman's Village

  • Affordable room rates

  • Beachfront setting

  • Convenient laundry nearby

Things to Consider

  • Smaller pool

  • Busier area than our previous stays

  • Restaurants and attractions nearby tend to be pricier

Which Stay Would We Choose Again?

Honestly, all three.

If we were looking for a romantic beachfront escape with incredible service, we'd choose The Mud.

If we wanted maximum relaxation and privacy, we'd book Pawathorn Pool Villas again in a heartbeat.

And if we wanted convenience, walkability, and easy access to restaurants and attractions, Pico Samui would be our pick.

The beauty of Koh Samui is that each area offers a completely different experience. By splitting our stay between three accommodations, we were able to experience several sides of the island and discover what worked best for our family.

If you're traveling with a baby, we highly recommend considering a multi-stop stay rather than booking a single hotel for your entire trip.
