What Does a Baby Sleep In While Camping? (Safe Sleep Options for Babies Outdoors)
This was probably our biggest question before taking Parker camping for the first time.
Where does a baby actually sleep?
At home, safe sleep is pretty straightforward. But once you're sleeping in a tent, things suddenly feel much less obvious. Can they sleep on an air mattress? Should they share your sleeping bag? Do they need a special camping bassinet? After several camping trips with our baby, here's the setup that worked for us, what we learned, and what we'd do again.
Can Babies Sleep in a Tent?
Absolutely.
The key isn't really the tent, it's making sure your baby's sleep space follows the same safe sleep principles you would use at home.
That means:
A firm, flat sleep surface
No loose blankets or pillows
Baby sleeping on their back
Appropriate clothing for the temperature
A sleep space designed for infant sleep
Once we focused on creating a safe sleep setup inside the tent, camping felt much less intimidating.
What We Used
Silver Cross Travel Playpen
For Parker, we brought our Silver Cross travel playpen. It folds down surprisingly small, fits inside our vehicle easily, and gave us a familiar sleep space that we already knew he slept well in. Having a dedicated sleep space also meant we never had to wonder if he was safe overnight. We simply set it up inside the tent before inflating our mattress.
A Tall Tent Makes a Huge Difference
One thing we hadn't thought about before buying our tent was height. Many backpacking tents simply aren't tall enough to comfortably fit a travel crib.
We chose a taller tent that comfortably fit the playpen with room for us to move around. It made bedtime, overnight feeds, and diaper changes dramatically easier.
What About Keeping Baby Warm?
This was probably our biggest concern. Rather than using blankets, we dressed Parker in layers.
Our setup looked like this:
Merino wool base layer
Warm hat available if temperatures dropped before bedtime (removed for sleep)
The Little Mo sleeping bag kept him warm without introducing loose blankets into his sleep space. It also stayed on when he rolled around, unlike blankets that inevitably end up kicked off.
Should Babies Sleep in Your Sleeping Bag?
For us, no. It may seem like the easiest option, but adult sleeping bags aren't designed for infant safe sleep. Instead, we preferred having Parker in his own sleep space beside us. That also meant one parent could easily get up for feeds without disturbing everyone else.
Our Nighttime Setup
This ended up working incredibly well. Our bed was a double sleeping pad beside Parker's playpen. Instead of one double sleeping bag, we each used separate sleeping bags. Looking back, we'd actually change that. though. Next time, we’re going to use a shared double sleeping bag instead (we will let you know how it goes!). We think that would make overnight breastfeeding much easier because I could feed Parker lying beside me without fully getting out into the cold.
Sometimes it's the little camping lessons you only learn after doing it once.
Other Baby Camping Sleep Options
Not every family uses a playpen. Some parents choose:
Travel playpen - Familiar, safe, enclosed. Takes more space.
Camping travel crib - Lightweight. Can be expensive.
Portable bassinet - Great for younger babies. Outgrown quickly.
Floor bed (older toddlers) - Simple. Only appropriate once age and safety allow.
For us, we'd choose the playpen again without hesitation.
Tips That Made Bedtime Easier
A few small things made a surprisingly big difference:
Put baby to bed wearing tomorrow's base layer.
Keep diapers and wipes within arm's reach.
Use a dim headlamp instead of lanterns.
Stick to your normal bedtime routine as much as possible.
Expect bedtime to take a little longer than it does at home.
Camping is exciting, and babies notice all the new sights and sounds.
Would We Change Anything?
Honestly, not much. Our sleep setup worked far better than we expected. If we changed anything, we'd simply upgrade to a shared sleeping bag for ourselves and continue using Parker's travel playpen and Little Mo sleeping bag. Having a safe, familiar sleep space gave us confidence, and Parker ended up sleeping surprisingly well outdoors.
Final Thoughts
If you're wondering what a baby sleeps in while camping, don't overcomplicate it.
For us, the answer was surprisingly similar to home: a travel playpen, warm layers, and a safe infant sleeping bag.
Once we had that figured out, camping became one of our favourite ways to travel as a family.

FAQs About Baby Sleep While Camping
Can a baby sleep in a tent? Yes, as long as you follow safe sleep guidelines by providing a firm, flat sleep surface and dressing your baby appropriately for the temperature.
Can a baby sleep in an adult sleeping bag? No. Adult sleeping bags are not designed for infant safe sleep. We chose to use a travel playpen and an infant-specific sleeping bag instead.
What temperature is too cold for camping with a baby? It depends on your baby's age, clothing, sleeping gear, and your comfort level. We always checked the overnight forecast and dressed Parker in appropriate layers rather than relying on loose blankets.
What is the best bed for a baby while camping? For us, a travel playpen inside a tall family tent worked best. It provided a familiar, safe sleep space and fit comfortably beside our sleeping pad.
